Is it safe to take part in Every Small Step during the current COVID-19 outbreak?

Whenever you take part in any event it is important to look after yourself. Please ensure you follow all government advice and look after your own safety as well as the safety of those you come into contact with. Keep an eye in your inbox or on our Every Small Step Facebook group for advice and updates, follow social distancing where appropriate and stay safe.

Why take part this October?

Last year we tried something new and were amazed by the response. Our Digitial Services have become a vital tool in us supporting family carers across the UK, delivering this programme of support again in 2021 is going to cost around £30,000 and we need your support to make it happen. Join us, step out and listen to the incredible stories of family dementia carers across the UK.

What is Every Small Step?

Together, we will take small steps every day to highlight and support the brilliant work of family dementia carers across the country. Every day between the 13-17th October you will hear from leading researchers through to young carers in our series of podcasts. We want to share the incredible stories of people across the country who are caring for those with dementia. Walk with us and listen to their stories.

There are 700,000 people in the UK who are caring for a friend or family member with dementia. We invite you to take your own small steps and walk with us, as we take a step for every family dementia carer.

How do I listen to the podcasts?

From the 13th October, our new podcast series will launch on the website. Why not head out for a walk and listen to the latest edition.

How do I track my steps?

We recommend using the Strava app to track your walks. Strava can be linked with your supporter page after you register so you can share your progress with your friends and family. If you cannot do this then you can manually add your completed miles to your page by logging on to your supporter page from the 13th October.

What is Strava?

Strava is an app that allows you to track your athletic activity using a compatible GPS device and then upload your activity to your Strava account from the device directly.

How do I link my page with Strava?

If you have a Strava account, you can now track your workouts on your Every Step Counts fundraising page!

If you do not yet have a Strava account, please create one here prior to following the below steps.

To connect your fundraising page account with Strava, simply follow the below instructions.

  1. Sign into your fundraising page account /website link/ using your ordinary log in details.
  2. Select your name and select the 'Account' option on the drop-down menu.
  3. Once you are inside your page account, select 'Manage Connections.
  4. Select the 'Strava' button.
  5. Follow the prompts to approve the connection between your fundraising page account and your Strava account.
  6. You will be redirected back inside your account. You can now see that you're connected.

Can I hide my location on Strava?

Add Privacy Zones

A privacy zone will hide the portion of your activity that starts or ends in your zone from all activities. For example, if you don’t want anyone to know where you live or work, you can set up a privacy zone between ? and ? mile (200m-1km) around your home address or your office address. This means that even as you share your walks on your supporter page they wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the start or endpoint of your activity.

To enable a Privacy Zone log into your Strava account. Click on the Privacy tab on the left side of the page. Enter an address or GPS coordinate in the text field provided under 'Hide your house/office on your activity maps,' select the size of the privacy radius, and click 'Create Privacy Zone.'

How do I link my page with fitbit?

Fitbit integration is through Strava - please visit strava.fitbit.com and click “connect”. You can also find a Fitbit help video here.

Can I record my miles without a tracker?

Adding your miles manually

If you do not have a tracker you can link, do not worry, you can log your walks and manually add them to your account. Simply log into your account and click the + button next to your miles logged on the right hand side.

How much does it cost to take part?

It is just £5 to register for Every Small Step. Paying this small registration fee helps cover the administrative costs of delivering the event ensuring that your fundraising goes directly to supporting family dementia carers.

Can I register a team?

Yes, during registration you can select 'create a team'. Once your registration is complete you can then share your team name or send your team mates the link to your team and they can register onto your team. They can also select 'Join a team' during their registration and search for your team name.

If I forget to create a team during my registration, can I do it at a later date?

Simply log back into your account, go to your fundraising page and you will see the 'create a team' button. Select this, create your team and share the team name/link for your team with mates so they can join it.

What is the fundraising target?

We ask that once you are registered for Every Small Step you raise as much as you can. No matter how big or small your target is we are here to help you. The money you raise will go towards funding our brand new virtual carers centre providing support to family dementia carers across the UK.

How do I raise money and where does it go?

Every Small Step is an event for Dementia Carers Count (DCC) the national UK charity dedicated to family and friends who are caring for someone with dementia. Dementia is one of the most urgent public health crises of the 21st Century, and the impact of 2020 has certainly been felt by those affected by the condition and those caring for them. There  are 700,000 family carers of people with dementia in the UK alone, and with a diagnosis taking place every  four seconds, and with 1.6 million individuals expected to be living with dementia by 2040, a global spotlight  has been cast on the condition

Can I fundraise online?

Absolutely – online fundraising is a fantastic way for you to collect sponsorship from your friends, family and colleagues, particularly those you don’t see every day. From your donors’ point of view, it is a quick, easy and secure method of donating. When you register for the event an online supporter page is automatically created for you. This is your page, add your picture, write some text about what you’re doing and why, set a target, then send the link out to everyone you have ever met so that they can sponsor you easily and securely.

Can we fundraise as a team?

Yes – it can make your fundraising target easier to meet if you fundraise together. You will even have a team fundraising page which is created automatically when you register as a team.

About Dementia Carers Count

Who are Dementia Carers Count?

We’re working for a world where all friends and family members taking care of someone with dementia feel confident, supported and heard. We recognise the important challenge that family dementia carers face when they are responsible for that person who really needs them.

We provide free courses designed and delivered by healthcare professionals, that will help carers develop skills and build confidence to navigate the highs and lows. Learning how to make life manageable and maintain their own health and well-being is vital when caring for someone with dementia. 

Our Dementia Carers Centre is at the heart of our vision, and will be a place that fully understands and empathises with what carers are going through. Where they can drop their shoulders and relax whilst learning and recharging their batteries.

How are DCC services being funded?

As a charity we do not make a profit. We are fortunate to have reserves from the sale of the assets of our previous charity (we used to own care homes) to invest in the development and start-up costs of our new services. It costs the charity £650 per person to deliver the three-day course, including food and accommodation and it costs us £125 per person to deliver each of our one-day courses. We do not want anyone to be excluded from our services so we are not charging a fee for our courses. Therefore, we invite course participants (or their employers) to donate to the charity on completion of the course, if they are able to. A donation of £5 pays for a coffee break for a carer, £15 pays for a carer’s lunch and £300 pays for an expert course facilitator for a day. All donations, big or small, make such a difference.

What makes someone a carer?

Often, family carers of people with dementia don’t define themselves as a carer. According to our definition, you are a carer if, “your friend or family member needs your help and support to live well with dementia; regardless of whether you live with them or not.”

What types of dementia are covered on the courses?

Our courses have already helped hundreds of family carers of people living with various types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, vascular and mixed dementias as well as the other rarer forms such as posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), Lewy body and fronto-temporal dementias.

Our courses also support carers of family members who are awaiting a formal diagnosis.
